By Brendan Kadey

The fish who keeps on swimming is the first to chill upstream.” “Chill” — 311’s latest release — is what it’s all about. People look for chill in different mediums: music, food, extra-curricular activities, yoga. But for die-hard fans,“chill” will be performing at the Shrine Mosque on March 1. Some students say 311 (three-eleven) rolling through town is the highly anticipated event of spring and for some it’s eclipsing the magic of spring break. “311 comes around occasionally and spring break is every year,” junior Russell West said. “The concerts are an awesome surprise.” Numerous 311 stickers grace the bumpers of cars in the parking lots and a variety of the band’s T-shirts are seen daily in the hallways. Can it be assumed the band grows in popularity like a fad? “You can say it’s been [like that] for about five years,” West said. “Friends influenced each other and it just grew.” Students attending the concert are hoping to catch some new tracks off of the band’s upcoming album. The band isn’t exactly rushing to finish “Chill.” “The new album should be like Pink Floyd; with instrumentals, it can be mellow and upbeat,” West said. According to the band’s official website (www.311.com),“P-Nut,” bass player wrote: “We are playing in the studio’s live room and making ideas as we go, and we are planning on going through those sessions and making songs from them. “It’s a dream come true to be working like this, relaxed and fun. Expect great things.” The event of the year for 311 fans is “3-11 Day 2008: All Roads Lead Back to New Orleans,” scheduled for March 11 at the New Orleans Arena. West, junior Kyle Rhodes and senior Michael Provance plan to attend. The band has already sold more than 13,000 tickets to the Arena, which is within walking distance of the French Quarter. The event is every other year in New Orleans; however, in 2006, it was displaced by Hurricane Katrina and moved to Memphis. Glendale graduate Charlie Dunn attended “3-11 Day 2006” with a few friends and he said it was a night he would never forget. “Every time they try to out-do themselves,” he said. “They played three sets for about five hours and eventually the city of Memphis had to shut them down or they would have played more. “It was the sweetest show by far.” Tickets to the 311 show may be obtained at the Shrine Mosque ticket office. The general admission ticket price is $35. Box office hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Or order by calling 1-800-578-9919. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 1
